Carpet Cleaning Docklands Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety Policy sets out how Carpet Cleaning Docklands manages safety during all carpet, upholstery and hard floor cleaning activities. Our aim is to prevent injury, protect health and safeguard property for our clients, employees, contractors and members of the public in every environment where we work.
Policy Statement
Carpet Cleaning Docklands is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace and to carrying out all cleaning services in a manner that minimises risk. We will comply with relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry good practice. Health and safety considerations are integral to the planning and delivery of every job, whether in homes, offices, commercial premises or communal areas.
We recognise that effective health and safety management relies on competent people, clear procedures and continual review. All team members are expected to take reasonable care of their own safety and the safety of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions.
Responsibilities
The management of Carpet Cleaning Docklands has overall responsibility for implementing this policy and providing the resources needed to maintain safe working conditions. This includes the selection of appropriate equipment, chemicals and personal protective equipment, as well as the organisation of training and supervision.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for ensuring that staff follow agreed safe systems of work, report hazards promptly and cooperate with any investigation or inspection. They must check that risk assessments are in place, that equipment is fit for purpose and that any incidents are recorded and appropriately addressed.
All employees and contractors have a duty to work safely, follow instructions and training, use protective equipment correctly, and report hazards, near misses, accidents or defective equipment as soon as they are identified.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before starting any cleaning project, we assess the risks associated with the specific environment and the tasks to be carried out. This may include risks from manual handling, slips and trips, electrical equipment, water and moisture, chemicals, working at height for stair cleaning or access to elevated areas, and interaction with occupants or the public.
Risk assessments provide the basis for our safe systems of work. Control measures can include using low risk cleaning solutions where possible, establishing clear hose and cable routes to reduce trip hazards, placing warning signs at entrances and walkways, and isolating work areas to limit access by non-authorised persons.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
Carpet Cleaning Docklands uses professional cleaning chemicals that are suitable for carpets, rugs, upholstery and other surfaces. All substances are selected and used in accordance with manufacturer instructions and applicable safety regulations. We obtain and maintain safety data sheets for all products.
Staff are trained in the correct dilution, application, storage and disposal of chemicals. Chemicals are kept in labelled containers, stored securely, and never decanted into unmarked bottles. Where possible, we choose products with reduced environmental and health impact, while still delivering effective cleaning results.
Personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection or masks is provided and used when indicated by the risk assessment or product safety data. Any accidental exposure or spillage is managed using clearly defined emergency procedures.
Use of Equipment and Electricity
Our machines and tools, including carpet extractors, vacuums, rotary machines and dryers, are regularly inspected, maintained and tested to ensure safe operation. Damaged or defective equipment is immediately taken out of service until repaired or replaced.
When using electrical equipment at client premises, our operatives check that sockets are suitable and not overloaded, and that cables and hoses are routed to minimise trip risks. We avoid blocking fire exits, corridors or escape routes and take particular care in areas with children, older persons or those with reduced mobility.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Carpet cleaning often involves lifting and moving equipment, furniture and accessories. Our staff receive guidance on safe lifting techniques, use of handling aids where available, and the importance of working within their personal capabilities. Wherever possible, we reorganise tasks to avoid unnecessary heavy lifting, twisting or reaching.
Clients are encouraged to advise us in advance about access issues, stairs, parking restrictions or any other factor that may increase manual handling risks, so that we can plan accordingly.
Slips, Trips and Access Control
Wet cleaning processes can temporarily increase the risk of slips and falls. Carpet Cleaning Docklands uses warning signs, barriers and clear communication with clients and occupants to manage this risk. We plan hose and cable layouts to keep walkways clear, tape down obstacles if appropriate and avoid creating hazards on stairs or at doorways.
During and after cleaning, we ensure adequate ventilation and use drying equipment where appropriate to reduce drying time. We advise clients about safe re-entry times and any specific precautions needed while carpets or upholstery are still damp.
Training, Information and Supervision
All new team members receive health and safety induction relevant to carpet and upholstery cleaning work, including chemical safety, equipment operation, manual handling, hazard spotting and emergency procedures. Ongoing training is provided when new methods, products or machinery are introduced.
Supervision is provided proportionate to the experience of the operative and the complexity of the job. Clear instructions and job sheets are used so that everyone understands their responsibilities and the required safety measures for each assignment.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
Accidents, near misses and hazardous incidents are reported and recorded as part of our continuous improvement process. We investigate the causes, put corrective actions in place and review any affected risk assessments or procedures.
Our operatives are briefed on what to do in case of fire, chemical exposure, electric shock or personal injury while on a client site. This includes raising the alarm, contacting emergency services where necessary, and following the specific emergency arrangements in the building they are working in.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
Carpet Cleaning Docklands encourages feedback from employees and clients on health and safety matters. Suggestions for improving safety, reducing risk or enhancing training are welcomed and considered during policy reviews.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly, and whenever there are changes in legislation, working practices, equipment or the nature of the services we provide across our service area. Updated versions are communicated to all staff and are available to clients on request.
By following this policy, Carpet Cleaning Docklands aims to ensure that every carpet cleaning project is carried out safely, professionally and with full regard for the wellbeing of everyone involved.
